I first discovered Bloom Into you through the 2018 anime adaptation. I fell in love with it and was devestated when there was no second season, and considering how long it has been since the first I have given up hope long ago. However, the show is, as far as I've read online, a very faithful adaptation of the first four volumes and a little bit of volume 5. Recently I have stumbled across a manga shop not too far from me and they had these last four volumes in stock (though not Volumes 1 and 4 specifically) and so I bought them. All four of them. For the sake of collecting one of my favourite series I do want to get the rest of them eventually, but my priority is getting closure on this story that I started following three years ago.
Bloom Into You follows Yuu, a girl who has never fallen in love with anyone. She likes romance in books and movies but has never been with someone who made her feel those big emotions she's always heard about. Through circumstances she meets another girl, Touko, who claims to be the same and has rejected every love confession she has gotten, but suddenly falls for Yuu. The feeling is not mutual, but there is something special there. We follow them as their relationship developes and as Yuu tries to figure out what exactly she feels for Touko.
The artstyle of both the show and the books is fantastic. Soft but fun, it striks a balance between being consistent while still having enough room for the occasional overexagurations. The show adds to the style by giving everything the beautiful pastel colour pallet that the covers of the books have. It is simple yet stunning.
In preperation to read the manga I've been rewatching the show and took the opportunity to introduce my boyfriend to it. He has, very fittingly I think, described the show as "feeling real". It isn't your typical over the top romance, nor is it needlessly drawn out. Yuu and Touko, as well as the other characters feel like actually people in the ways they think and communicate their emotions, and I think that's why this series in particular has resonated with me more than other romance shows have.
Bloom Into You is an easy recommendation from me, whether you want to read it or watch it. Just be aware that the show has a very unsatisfying ending that resolves none of the plot points and will leave you wanting more :P
