I'm a simple woman. I was aimlessly wandering through my local bokk store, walked passed the manga section, and there, on the shelf of new releases, did I see the cover of this book. It was an impulse purchase. I didn't know what this was. I saw the cover, I read the blurb on the back, and I thought this was going to be some raunchy romance written and illustrated by a woman primarily for a female audience and it was cheap. I thought this would just be some simple fun.
And it is. But it's also way better than I thought it would.
Our part human part succubus protagonist Lily has just been cheated on by her boyfriend, which is bad for the obvious reason, but also because she needs to suck the energy out of people through kisses else she could die, but she refuses to just go around making out with random guys. She wants actual romance and someone who loves her. By random chance the love interest helps her when she's at a low point, and she thinks he's a jerk at first and blah blah blah...
You know, I sounds stupid and cliche when I discribe it like this, and it is, but it does those stupid cliches well enough that it's entertaining. The first volume covers the first three chapters of the story and it is still ongoing. Volume 2 should come out in July and I'm unironically looking forward to it.
99% Succubus-chan is simple but really fun. An easy read that has left me wanting more, especially because chapter 3 ends on a note that promises to make this simple concept more interesting. If you're a fan of romance, want it to be more "female gaze" oriented, and like the occasional lewdness here and there then I would highly recommend picking this up.
Also it's pretty funny. Some of my favourite visual gags in a while :)
